Increasing a Low Milk SupplyThe number one breastfeeding concern among the nursing mothers I see in my private practice is insufficient milk supply. There are a number of issues to consider before using galactogogues, which are substances that can increase your milk supply. Before adding any galactogogues, I first recommend taking a look at KellyMom.com for suggestions from Kelly Bonyata, IBCLC on how to determine if your milk supply is truly low, who to contact for help and potential causes and how increase a low milk supply. Moms sometimes use herbal treatments to boost their supply to increase their pumping output so that they can have a large stash of expressed milk in their freezer. Some moms simply need a galactogogue in combination with treatments for low milk supply. Even adoptive moms use galactogogues with success to increase the amount of milk they can provide for their baby. Over the past 8 years, I have seen the best success in boosting supply among mothers using at least fenugreek and blessed thistle in combination. Approximately 90% of the moms I used this combination with have described an an increase in milk supply when combining these herbs with traditional methods for increasing milk supply. It typically takes 24-48 hours to see a noticeable difference in milk supply. Preferred Galactogogues:
currently unavailable from our company- available through Motherlove.com Recommended by lactation consultants nationwide, More Milk Plus is great tasting, contains no alcohol, and works fast (24-48 hours) to boost your milk supply*! The active herbs in this herbal supplement are fenugreek, blessed thistle, nettle leaf, and fennel seed in a sweet tasting glycerite base. A glycerite is an alcohol free liquid herbal extract. The alcohol is slowly steamed away and replaced with vegetable glycerin, a sweet tasting "syrup" derived from coconuts. More Milk Plus is made from fresh, certified organic herbs that are processed right after harvesting. NOT for use during pregnancy. A 4 ounce bottle should last 3-4 weeks, depending upon your body weight.
*The above remedies for increasing milk supply have been used by and are generally considered safe for nursing moms.
