Medela PersonalFit Breast Shields

PersonalFit BreastshieldMedela Personal Fit Breast Shields were designed with the varying sizes of women's breasts in mind.  Breasts do not come in just one size, so why should breast shields come in just one size?   Over half of the women I consult with who are using a breast pump do not have the proper size of breast shields for their breasts.  This can impact not only your comfort but also your milk production.

In an independent study by Dr. Paula Meier, over half (51.4%) of the nursing mothers in the study were fitted with either a Large or Extra Large Medela breast shield within the first days after birth, and over three quarters (77.1%) eventually used these larger sizes in order to pump comfortably and effectively.

A correctly-fitted breast shield will help make your pumping comfortable, and allow the pump to remove as much of your milk as possible. It is almost impossible to tell which size breast shield is the best fit without watching the nipple movement during pumping. However, if your nipple appears large and fits tightly and rubs the sides of the tunnel of the breast flange, you may benefit from a larger size. Your nipple should move freely and easily. A tightly-fitting breast shield does not allow good breast emptying--even with the best breast pump and a strong milk ejection reflex because it squeezes the small ducts inside the nipple that carry your milk out of the breast.

If the nipple tunnel of the breast shield that came with your Medela Breast Pump feels too tight, you need to move up a size.  If you are not sure about whether your shields are the proper size, try using your pump with the shields that came with it on a comfortable setting for about 2 minutes.  Look at what your nipples look like inside of the nipple tunnel (flange) of the breast shield.  Your nipples should get longer after pumping for 2 minutes without touching the sides of the nipples tunnels (flanges).  If your nipples feel sore after pumping, it could be that your breast shields are not large enough.  This can have an impact on your milk production and comfort.

The standard size is 24mm comes with all Medela breast pumps.
